Resting on our laurels…no chance!

2 months ago By Pitchside View

CLUB CHAIRMAN Jez Avens writes an open letter to all the club’s supporters to herald the start of the new season.

Dear supporters

It is with great delight that as your club chairman I get to pen this welcome letter ahead of the new season.

Well here we go again! I’m sure like me, most of you have thought the summer months have dragged on, desperately waiting for the new season to kick off!

During the close season, the board haven’t been resting on their laurels and they have been busy getting ready for the new season in earnest.

Mark Shutt has been re-signing the bulk of last season's squad plus adding new talent to his squad. Clive Blunt has been busy setting up the new under 21s team as has Barry South with the under 18s.

We also have the second and third teams which this season are headed up respectively by Max Morgan and Rob Thomsett, so we are truly now a football club for all abilities. And of course main board member and youth chairman Steve Davies has been organising coaches and volunteers for the club’s lifeblood, our youth teams.

I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped get the ground ready for the new season; sprucing up the paint work, knocking down the old toilets, fixing the nets behind the goals, etc etc. Really, without all your help we wouldn’t have a club.

We are still desperately in need of more people to be involved, and as a community we need you to help the club.

We need volunteers to turn up and help in all areas. Be it in the bar, kitchen, stewards, cleaning etc. It doesn’t matter if you can only offer an hour a month – anything is better than nothing. There is a list of urgent positions on the noticeboard in the clubhouse so please get involved. Add your name to the sheet and help keep the club running for the benefit of the whole community.

For those that were unable to attend the AGM in June, I thought I would share some of the important points contained within the Treasurers Report:

• At the end of season 2015/16 we were concerned as to whether or not the club would survive – we had a debt of £75,000. People came together to raise as much money as we could in two months and this achieved £45,000 Throughout the year we have traded, many debts have been paid or converted to shares. The bank overdraft of £10,000 has been cleared.

• We still have some outstanding debts and at the end of May 2017 they were: The balance on the stand which had been reduced to £6,500 with a repayment plan in place to be fully repaid by April 2018. Plus, we continue to pay an outstanding debt to the electricity company that will also be cleared in the same timescale.

• Our Business Plan said we wanted to be debt free in three years. The good news is if we have another season like the last it is looking like we might be debt free next year. So keep drinking the beer everyone, it’s all for a good cause!

• When finalised, a copy of the full accounts will be circulated for approval and once audited will be shared on the club’s website.

This leaves me lastly to wish Mark, all the players, the coaches of all our teams the very best of luck this season. We know you will do the club proud.

Yours Sincerely

Jez
